About Luxima

Luxima is the Digital Product Passport platform built by MBP Systems, a deep-tech spin-out from University College Dublin. The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation will require millions of products to carry a digital passport, and the small and mid-sized businesses it reaches first don't have compliance departments to cope. Luxima takes the product data a business already has — however scattered, inconsistent or half-missing — and turns it into compliant passports automatically. That transformation is a genuinely hard data problem, and it's the core of what you'd be building.

The role

You'll own the engine room of the platform: the services that ingest messy real-world product data, decide what a given product category legally requires, generate the passport and publish it to the world. You'll work directly with the founding team — including the researchers behind the underlying approach — and you'll have real authority over architecture, data models and infrastructure in your area. The role is full-stack, but the centre of gravity is firmly behind the API: expect most of your time in services, pipelines and Postgres, with occasional trips into the React front end.

What you'll build

  • The ingestion pipeline — turning spreadsheets, ERP exports and API feeds into clean, structured product data, with AI-assisted extraction and human-checkable validation at every stage.
  • The compliance rules engine — the system that maps product data to per-category DPP requirements across regulations, and can explain why a passport says what it says.
  • Passport generation and publishing — rendering compliant passports, issuing QR codes and identifiers, and serving public passport endpoints that stay fast and available at scale.
  • Integrations and the public API — the connectors and endpoints that let customers' existing systems talk to Luxima without manual work.
  • Reliability and security — the observability, testing and data-protection practices a compliance product has to be able to stand behind.

What you'll bring

  • 6+ years building and running production backend or full-stack systems, with clear ownership of services end to end.
  • Strong Node.js/TypeScript in production (deep Python experience is also welcome — tell us about it).
  • Serious PostgreSQL skills: schema design for evolving domains, migrations, query performance.
  • Experience with validation-heavy or data-intensive systems — ETL, rules engines, document processing or similar — where correctness genuinely matters.
  • Thoughtful API design and comfort operating what you build on cloud infrastructure (we're on AWS).
  • A security and data-protection mindset — our customers trust us with commercial product data, and GDPR is table stakes.
  • The communication habits remote work depends on: clear writing, honest status, decisions in the open.

Nice to have

  • LLM integration in production: extraction pipelines, structured output, evaluation.
  • Event-driven or queue-based architectures for document and data processing.
  • Domain exposure to compliance, regtech, supply chain or product data (PIM/ERP).
  • Familiarity with GS1 standards — Digital Link, GTINs — or the emerging DPP technical specifications.
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform, CDK) and CI/CD ownership.

The engagement

This is a 6-month contract with a planned extension path to 12 months, tied to our platform roadmap. You'll contract through your own company or an umbrella arrangement (Ireland, UK or EU). We're based at NovaUCD, University College Dublin's innovation hub, and work hybrid — time in the office with the team, remote when it suits the work. The day rate depends on experience — tell us your expectations and we'll be straight about fit.
